와이어드 Bill Wasik과의 인터뷰 내용을 공개합니다.
Bill Wasik: the editor for Wired, is particularly interested in how TEDx events impact local communities and how TEDx could work in the corporate environment. Chris Anderson and Lara suggested you would be a great person to talk about TEDxSamsung and the success of it. I heard you wrote a book about it, tell me the story.
As you know I organized TEDxSamsung as an licensee and would make company be fun and be creative for heartbeat life of our own. and experienced huge energy of people’s some inner motivations and passions that we hid in my heart. now I quit Samsung and I wrote a book named ‘What happened to the angry monkeys’, how important inner motivations and how we make it. actually it describes a journey with TEDx in my life. and it becomes bestseller and its abstraction is translated in 5 language by volunteers who love the contents. I wanna share it with you =). anyway I’m having time to spread ideas how to make creative companies.
I believed the most serious problem in the company is learned helplessness of employees. we are always pressed for time and a lot of things to do within the time. people are exhasted. and company culture is strict and hierarchical and functional. we’re losing passions and inner motivations, but you know, that means creative also disappear.
First of all I think we need to get back heartbeat life of our own. we want bread, but we want roses, too! and maybe this is korean and asian culture only. we put values ‘we’ than ‘me’. we think ‘without we’, I cannot exist. without job, wihout family, I cannot survive. until recent times in the industrial age, that works very fine. but this is changed. this is creativie age. and more and more people values ‘me’ than ‘we’.
I think we need a whole new different ‘mind’ platform. we need to change atmosphere. TEDx was really good platform to re-think everything. people accepted TED as an innovative platform to keep following and opens their mind. while I organized TEDxSeoul and attended TED conference in the california. I decied to start TEDx for the Samsung.
it’s similar with wikipedia. it can be modified by anyone, but why it is not broken by some bad man because we think it is encyclopedia so when people write some bad thing, they fit it with the form.
: TED is tribe network. start with tribe. I found people who want to with. and only 6 people are gathered. but I didn’t care.
there are two streams. one is spreading TEDTalks via intranet and held small scale events biweekly. and another thing is doing R&D activities. it’s not Research and Development, but Relax and Dance such as Flashmob, and Dancing Project like Dancing Matt around the world, and Libdup.
and we clamed to ’100/20 rule’. let’s meet after get off the work. we held TEDx event every second friday evening. very funny haha but, people who want to enjoy TED culture grouped together. community member are fast growing. and within 1 year, its scale is over 2,000 thousand from just employee to board member.
now I suggested new theory about mass energy equvalence named E equal mc2.
I saw ‘energy’ through TED and TEDx experience. we need to focus how to raise our inner energy. To make inner connected culture, mindset is very important, and also ‘C’ keyword such as ‘connected, community, channel, collaboration, co-creation and so on’. is more important. so I re-declared equivalence of energy as an mindset and C square. I believe organization should focus energy of company. also country also focus on the energy of society.
I believed TEDx ultimate solution. through TEDx, people are opening their mind and cooperate each other. and positive about the change and positive to trying to new. if you want to connect people with inner motivations, try TEDx, and try anything and everything. not for company, but for yourself. that makes we I believe.
you know, in the company ‘surplus’ cannot be accpted. at first time, I was attacked in different ways. but people helped to raise up my mind. now Samsung launched ‘Creative Lab’. anyone who want to trying to do new challengeble thing, they can request ‘Taskforce Team’. no regular working-hour, no purpose driven by company but only by team. some TF trying to make fun theory how to enjoy, some TF trying to make eye-mouse for muscle-deases. some TF makes new innovation platform such as British’s got talented.
- making inner connection with people. when we feel we are connected, we become positive and we feel Heartbeat.
- ‘innovation culture’ is side-effect. people tend to throw new think to people, people tend to try to do new things.
- open-minded decision making. it can cultuvate real innovation.
The most surprising activity that I want to share is ‘Samsung Redballoon Project’. it is motivated by DARPA balloons project which put the 10 balloons in the US. did you see that? MIT student team win the competitions by using SNS message structure.
when I saw it, I want to experiment how we are connected by individual, not by organization. because doing TEDxSamsung, I found if we are connected to someone internally, we tend to help others even though they don’t have any benefit from it. so I believed individual connection is real key of company’s innovation. at that time, people who atteneded TEDxSamsung is over 2 thousand. it is big, but very small of whole 300,thousand employees.
but I want to know how people are connected. so I organized Samsung Redballoon Project. we put 9 balloons in the world! of Samsung branches. samsung is everywhere you know.
we put them korea, us, british, austrailia, china. we spreaded newsletter and broadcasted the information we want to try for two weeks. and started. people should spread messages to find balloons maybe near of them and their friends. we cannot use SNS, so we only used intranet mails, messengers, phones. someone mailed to 100 people.
the result? I don’t expect we find them all. but we did in 45 hours. actually I put 5 balloons in 5 areas in the korea. that is found in 2 hours.
more remarkable thing is, that is found in 2.4 degrees. that means, you know, anything we want to find answer can be solved in 2 or 3 degrees of people. it is more powerful than 6 degrees of separation. in the age of creative, that’s what we want to get. the answer is already inside of us. if we making people more connected, we can be more creative and also more be passionate.
